Don’t Go Under The Car!!

My bearded dragon is the most determined lizard I’ve ever encountered. My other bearded dragon was the other most determined lizard I’ve ever encountered. Am I just blessed to be with headstrong lizards? I’ve had a glorious green iguana and salamanders with strong wills as well. I love them and hope they forgive me for not giving them the best lives in my youth and ignorance.

I love free will, rebelliousness, and determination (in preferred circumstances). Lil’ Murph has it. When he doesn’t get his way at that very moment (or within 10 seconds that he is denied his decision), he pouts. Not because he’s being a big baby, but because he knows he is a being in this world too. It seems to him others do as they wish, so what the hell?!

This is the look of adorable defiance.

If he wants spa time and I try to take him out before he is ready, he pushes his molecules down into the sink. If I pick him up when he’s comfy, he does the “wiggle squiggle” to say, “Nope, comfy here. Leave me be.” If I’m holding him outside and he squirms to get down in the wrong spot and 15 seconds later, I show him he can get down now… he shuts down. He is like liquid lizard, and I have to pour him from my hand onto the grass. Then he lays there pouting until he finds an interesting reason to be where I placed him.

Another thing he does is get hellbent on going somewhere. For example: I’m speaking to the neighbor outside and  Murph decided he wanted to crawl under a certain bush. I pick him up and place him further from it. Getting him out won’t be easy,  and what’s in there, a spider, a snake?

A moment later, and he’s eyeballing that bush again. There he goes. I pick him up and place him further away and facing the opposite direction. He looks okay with this… oh, but, no no no. He’s pretending. He takes a few steps away, but then looks back at that bush.

“Murphy, I’m watching you.” That look in the one eye that I can see is getting serious. “Murphy, don’t do it.”   He pauses. It’s easy to speak way longer than expected to the neighbors, but it happens so often that one can almost expect it.😅

He chills for a while. But I’m distracted… off he goes!!! Okay, Love, let’s scoot way down the way here, you adorable booger. Does that work? Certainly not, not if his intention is in sight!! I’ve had to leave areas entirely due to his determination!! Love that.

Here is Murph determined to go under my dad’s Cutlass. Dad is gone now. I don’t think I will ever stop calling it his car.

I had to get Murph away from it five times before I just relocated the both of us!!

Now, I sound like a dork in this video because I’ve been sick, which really ticks me off because I only get sick once every 3 to 5 years. And this is the second time this winter. But I’m getting better.

Watch Murph plotting this. It was on his mind the entire time you’re looking at him. This is the 5th time I’ve moved him and discussed why with him. 😆

Love lizards.  Beautiful, stubborn angels.

  1. Murph is a rebel with a cause (to do what he wants being his cause) by the sounds of it. 🦎

  2. I wonder if Murph would like Daphne, my grandsons Dragon.

  4. I know of no one who lives near us to have a dragon. I’d love to see Murph with another. He’s watched videos of lizards and looks at pictures of himself. 😆 I’ve considered taking him to the pet store, but he doesn’t like more than a 2 minute ride. Animals in confined spaces make me sad anyway.
Daphne the Dragon is such a cute name. It seems that he’s had her for some time now. He must be knowledged in the way of lizardry.

  5. And people say that lizards don’t have personalities, and will and determination. The people who say that have never really tried to understand a lizard. He is adorable, stubborn little guy who knows how to express what he needs.

  6. Thank you so much, Sarasin, our wonderful friend. Yes, they’ve never tried. Many don’t care to. Some sadly haven’t experienced the peaceful friendship they offer and haven’t had the opportunity to see some have more, and certainly better personalities than some adults we might encounter. 😁 I’ll tell Murph what you said.
You’re right, he’s very expressive!! Sometimes, he shakes his head “no” at foods or even pushes them off his lips as I hand feed him if he doesn’t want what is offered. Half the time that he’s hungry, he’ll lick his lips (sort of) a few times to tell me.

  7. Each has their own little communications worked out with their people. My little Geyri, when she’s sitting at the front of her cave, sometimes wants me to hand feed her some greens or something. I can tell if she doesn’t want anything, because when I put the greens in front of her, she closes her eyes. Her signal that I’ve learned. They are amazing creatures, every one. 🥰

  8. So true. That is adorable!! Your Geyri & Chucky are so sweet. I love everything lizards do. Eating the little wormies & insects who’d rather live than get half chewed and digested alive, not so much. So I’m glad that when our Beardies age, they prefer herbivorious meals.

  9. Thanks, Yea I like vegetarians. I avoid the others and chose these 2 with that in mind. It’s just easier all around.

  10. Where’s his leash? You usually have one on him. He’s so adorable and headstrong. He wants to go under the care and he seems quite determined. Give him a hug from me and tell him I understand his frustration but he is loved and the person who loves him wants to keep him safe. ❤️ You’re a perfect lizard mom.

  11. The grandsons had lizards/dragons; a bearded and a shingleback. When they went on holidays I was their carer. Now, I don’t want one. But, I enjoyed looking after them.

  12. You know I tell him what people ask of me. He got his hug from our Gigi. 😁Well, he wants to be held when he wakes up, and he doesn’t move around much for a while. Ididn’t think I’d need it. It didn’t take long for him to get a burst of energy. Instead of grabbing the leash, I followed him everywhere with my chair. 😆I was recovering from a sickness and was having an off day. I had time to move that chair around more times than I care to admit. Luckily, the neighbor knows I’m not crazy, just love my Murph. He won her over. She said she never thought she’d like a lizard. She holds him and babytalks to him.
I had to relocate us to the deck after this video. He would not give up.

Perfect, no, but I try and appreciate your words so much. Murph would hug you back🦎🫂

  13. You were good to your grandlizards.😁 I’m glad you enjoyed them. You just gave me an education. Here I am thinking I know of nearly every lizard, and I’ve not heard of a shingleback. Widespread in New South Wales, I have a new cutie to research. Thank you for this, and for visiting us.

  16. We’d better keep the cats and lizards apart or they’ll take over the world. I had no idea their personalities were so similar!
