Meet Poppy the Pretty Hoppy Frog

Yes, this is a site about lizards, where the goal is to educate and entertain people about lizard companionship and what lizards experience. Of course the main goal Lil’ Murph and I set out to do is “To Convert The Masses To Love Lizards Too.”

But today I want to share a special being that is tiny in size, but huge in personality. And she mysteriously entered my life when I need her after a year of huge losses on December 16th, 2025.

Introducing… the amazing Poppy

I love this photo! I saw a cricket walk behind Poppy. She saw it in the mirror. She flipped around to eat it. Know what that means? She understands the concept of the mirror through observation!!
Poppy is SO cute when she looks up and thinks!!
🥰🥰🥰
Screenshot of video. The yellows are flash colors to warn predators of toxicity. Amazing!
Look at the curled hands and belly from the underside of the glass bookshelf!! Too cute. Too cute.
Gorgeous
About every other day we walk around and look out the windows & doors & at other things. Poppy turns away from something once she (possibly he) is bored with the scene.
Poppy is sometimes found on the tubing I ran from a humidifier outside of the enclosure & into it to keep the level at near 60% the best I can.
Poppy is sleeping with head low and pupils very tiny
I cut a toilet paper roll and placed it on the mirror, she likes to perch up there under the night time heat light sometimes.
She used to sleep here before deciding to sleep under the cave on the other side of the wood in the photo below. She has preferences & I am impressed at her smartness!
Since this photo, the tube has been placed in small tub, after finding bugs floating in accumulated water drips which should’ve been an obvious possibility, it’s now clipped into a water bottle I can frequently dump.
1st day with Poppy… look how green that day!

We’ve gotten close. She trusts me & makes it known. I love her.

What might Murph say about Poppy?

“Give me Lizardry or give me Death!” ❤️ Murph & Dawn & Poppy too

  1. Poppy looks amazing.

I love how she grasps the concept of mirrors.

  2. Poppy is beautiful and her new home is so wonderful. Murph must be so happy you have someone to love. He wouldn’t want you to be alone. He loved you too much for that, so he’s probably snickering to himself. Have fun and enjoy your new baby.

  3. I’m curious about the name Poppy. Any particular reason why you decided to name her that? The mirror is a pretty remarkable discovery. How do frogs compare to bearded dragons in intelligence?

  4. Your questions are too good Pete, not quick answers there. Well, after I had her a few days and had been studying her character, I thought of a few names. After all that happened in 2025, I thought about naming her Prayer, and a couple of others names I don’t recall now. She has a happy energy, so to speak. I’ve not had a frog before, so I needed a quick education to keep this sweet new friend alive (who is my sort of style of companion – uncommon and adorable). I thought if I don’t do things right or something is wrong that I’m not aware of, I didn’t want to be saddened when I hear the word Prayer (it’s spoken more than Poppy). Poppy felt right. It’s two syllables and happy-sounding in my opinion… it also rhymes with hoppy, but that’s irrelevant. I looked up all the meanings of the different colors of poppies. I didn’t know poppies came in anything but red or orange-ish red. To shorten the research, purple poppies are for animals (although lost to conflict and war), orange: enthusiasm and joy, yellow: celebration, peach: appreciation, gratitude, and warmth. More than anything, and some of these words feeling linked to her, it just felt right.
Yes, I was excited to see her realize the concept of the mirror. I knew she was smart, but that was awesome to watch her instantly know what to do!
I’m not sure how to compare the intelligence levels. I think I’ve been blessed with intelligent lizards and now a very smart frog. Perhaps it is similar, just their personalities and natures are different. Poppy used to tinkle on me occasionally. Now she never does. I think it was a degree of stress. This morning, she was asleep in her cave. A few moments later, I heard a noise and she was right at the glass staring out into the room. She walked right into my hand and wanted to be with me and look around! She curls her hands under her chest and gets comfy on my hand. Her stress with me is completely gone. She even lets me kiss her back and her itty bitty lips and nose, and lay my finger on her neck as a quick ‘I love you touch,’ I think she knows what it means and no longer walks away from it. However, she makes it known when she just wants to chill in the enclosure. She has moods.
I watched a tiny bird figure out how to get a twig 4 times the width of itself and the entry point into the small opening of a building, while most dogs can’t figure out how to get a wide branch through a narrow entrance. So, I declare brain size doesn’t always play the major role in intelligence that we assume it should. 😁

  5. Gigi, we don’t agree politically, and no matter in that, I adore you for your heart. Your comments mean so so very much. Thank you. I am grateful, Murph & I have such a beautiful friend in you. Your comments have stumped me in the realm of compassion to the point that I can’t reply right away sometimes, and I do not easily believe people. Your words, though, either you’re a seasoned fooler, or someone extraordinary. I think the latter. Thank you for years of support and friendship. Ya sweet jerk, you bring tears to my eyes more often than I care to admit.😁 I think Murph might have made you an official cuddle buddy. And hugs to you

Yes, I wish I had been recording it, but I didn’t expect to see it!! It was over in a second. Need to be prepared for the worst AND the cutest!!

  13. That’s not just cute that’s genuinely impressive 👀 Also the detail about the yellow flash colors warning predators, I had no idea frogs did that, learned something today. Animals have a way of showing up right on time don’t they 🥰
Hope you’re doing ok, Dawn. I’ve been missing a lot of blogs lately. Got busy with life works. But now finding time to catch up with what I love.
