Funny Lizard Friday – Episode 5

Lizards are cuddlier than most people can imagine!

Careful with those cuddles, though, lizards have a relaxing power! They simply calm you down. I watched Lil’ Murph nearly put three people to sleep who sat on the sofa and held him for the first time ever during a family gathering. I warned them ahead of time that he had magic dragon powers. They believed me when each and every one began to nod off sitting upright during the course of a couple of hours. 🥰

I spent years showing Dad my cutest lizard photos & videos, followed by, “Is she cute yet, Dad?” or “Is he cute yet (pertaining to Murph)?”
He’d sort of smile and say, “No.” or say, “No, but I’m glad it brings you joy.” It was difficult to comprehend that what was so precious to me did nothing much for the soul of someone who appreciates animals, although I do appreciate honesty. But, when he moved here so I can take care of him & he lived with Lil’ Murph for a very short time, he began offering to hold him! Finally, one day, I said, “Is he cute yet, Dad?” He responded as he looked at Murph with a sincere and elongated “Yeeesss.” in the certain soft tone only Dad does sometimes… or did. I may have smiled and said, “Finally!” or maybe I just smiled in my soul, I don’t remember now.

  3. So much personality. I’m glad you educated me about bearded dragons and their amazing ability to bond with humans.

Yeah, the medium – large lizards who are big enough to actually hold or lay upon you are calming. Temperament of the lizard may play a role, but more so, it’s the trust or relationship between the human and lizard that is a factor. There was one human Lil’ Murph did not like, his body language was obvious, and often he’d scramble to get away from that person. Regrettably, that person was a Murph-sitter in the past. I had a camera pointed at Murph’s enclosure, but I wonder what all made Murph dislike him so – maybe it was just something in his character.
When the basement was getting “water-proofed,” we walked around to the yard where the crew was doing something outside. Murph was resting across my forearm just still as can be. The lead guy of the crew said his beardie would never let him hold it that way. I didn’t say it, but that’s either because he hasn’t formed a bond, or the sweet thing hasn’t been treated well by humans.

  5. Thanks so much, Maggie! That has mysteriously happened with a few others I follow. A glitch in the system perhaps. To top it off, I no longer receive email notifications of others’ new posts & I haven’t for a long time. I must have tinkered with a setting… or something. I sincerely appreciate your following again.

  6. I haven’t found a way to articulate how grateful I am when I (& Murph) have been thanked by people for educating them about lizards/showing how smart they are and the companionship they can offer. It hasn’t happened a whole lot, but I love it so much, I dedicated a page to it called “What People Are Saying!” I believe our Lil’ Murph’s photogenicity continues to help to “Convert the Masses to Love Lizards Too.” 🙂
How a human treats a lizard is very important for a beautiful friendship. Lizards who have been treated poorly or neglected have emotional trauma, they don’t forget. I’ve seen a few videos of lizards who have a had a rough way to go & how they behave because of it.
    Thank you so much!

  8. Yes, I imagine the way Lil’ Murph was like, he probably hadn’t bonded with his bearded lizard.

    Murph: A rebel with a cause – 🙂
Super headstrong & entirely determined much of the time (love that) to obtain that which he decided on. With a huge heart, mind-reading brain, & charisma that won non-lizard fans both in person & online. And, and “Character at large who inadvertently is a model for the reptilian population.” 😁 And what is your title, he’s the “Goodwill Ambassador…?”
